While Laura and I had already taken a grafting class at the MN arboretum, I was curious to get more experience so I signed up for a class at Albrecht’s Nursery in Chippewa Falls WI. I was pleased to find it was only about an hour drive from the farm. This class was far more hands on than the previous class we took. Don hosted it out in his greenhouse where he showed us a couple of different grafting techniques and then let us pick 3 different tree and rootstock combinations to graft ourselves.

Don clearly had a lot of experience in grafting and it showed. The combination of watching him do a few and then letting us do some where he could offer feedback was awesome. He also showed us how and when to harvest scion wood which I found super valuable. I for one didn’t realize that scion wood should be only from the last years growth. Don showed us on a real branch how to determine the new growth by looking for the rings at the base on a branch.

I’d highly recommend Don’s class to anyone looking for a more hands on approach to learning how to graft apple trees!
